হাজী তাসারুল আলী

Haji Tasarul Ali migrated to Britain in 1967, joining his father, who had first come on a medical visa in 1957, first in Birmingham and then settling in Oldham. He went to work in a cotton mill, eventually becoming a night-shift supervisor, and remained until the mill closed in 1986. When he arrived, he estimated there were only 500–600 Bengalis in Oldham.

During the 1971 Liberation War, Tasarul Ali became one of the principal fundraisers in Oldham for the independence cause, personally raising £1,500 for 'Shangram,' the local war-support campaign. He later helped campaign for the permanent Shahid Minar in Oldham town centre, inaugurated in 1997. His testimony, recorded by the Bangla Stories oral history project at LSE and Cambridge, is among the most detailed accounts of mill life, community building, and the Liberation War from Greater Manchester.
