Who we are

British Bangladeshis is an informational archive website that preserves and shares the history of British Bangladeshi communities, places, and pioneers. This notice explains how personal data is handled when you visit the site or contact us.

If you have questions about privacy on this site, please use the contact page and include the word "privacy" in your message.

What we collect

We do not use analytics, advertising tools, or profiling tools on this site.

We may process limited personal data in the following situations:

  • Basic technical information needed to deliver the website, such as server logs collected by the hosting provider.
  • Information you choose to send through the contact form, such as your name, email address, subject line, message, and any file you attach.
  • Information you voluntarily submit for historical or editorial purposes, such as photographs, captions, oral histories, or corrections.

Why we use personal data

We use personal data only where it is relevant to running the archive and responding to contributors.

  • To reply to enquiries, corrections, and contribution offers.
  • To review and manage material submitted to the archive.
  • To maintain the security and reliability of the website.
  • To keep records of permissions, editorial decisions, and historical contributions where needed.

Our main lawful bases under UK GDPR are legitimate interests, consent where you choose to submit material, and compliance with legal obligations where relevant.

Third parties and service providers

The public pages of this site are static and do not use third-party analytics or advertising services.

Messages submitted through the contact form are sent through Formspree, which acts as a service provider for form handling and delivery. You should avoid sending sensitive personal data unless it is genuinely necessary.

Oral history and audio submissions made through the dedicated submission form are handled by Tally.so, which acts as a service provider for file collection and storage.

The hosting provider may also process routine technical data, such as IP addresses and request logs, to keep the site online and secure.

International transfers

Some service providers used to host or process website submissions may store or access data outside the UK. Where that happens, we rely on appropriate safeguards such as adequacy regulations or approved contractual protections.

How long we keep data

We keep contact messages only for as long as needed to reply, resolve the issue raised, or manage an ongoing contribution.

Material submitted for inclusion in the archive may be kept for longer where there is a legitimate historical, editorial, or record-keeping reason to do so.

Your rights

Under UK data protection law, you may have rights to:

  • request access to the personal data we hold about you
  • request correction of inaccurate data
  • request deletion where appropriate
  • object to certain uses of your data
  • request restriction of processing in some circumstances
  • complain to the Information Commissioner's Office if you believe your data has been handled unfairly

Information about your rights and how to complain is available from the Information Commissioner's Office.
