নুরুন্নবী মিয়া

Nurunnobi Miah arrived in Bradford in 1963 as a teenager, joining his brother who was already working in the textile mills. He spent thirty-one years in the same mill, combing and weaving wool, until it closed in 1993 when Yorkshire's textile industry finally collapsed. His account of the work, recorded by the Bangla Stories oral history project at LSE and Cambridge, is the most vivid testimony of the Bradford Bangladeshi mill experience: "A huge amount of dust would be created... my face would be like a ghost."

In 1971, when the Liberation War broke out in East Pakistan, Miah became a key fundraiser in Bradford. He personally collected £1,500 in donations and helped form committees to channel funds to the Mukti Bahini, watching events on BBC and Indian television from his home in Manningham.
