Biography
Born on 25 September 1915 in Patli village, Jagannathpur, Sylhet, Shah Abdul Majid Qureshi , known affectionately as "Moina Meah" , is believed to be the first Sylheti to own a restaurant in the United Kingdom. His India Centre restaurant became a venue for Indian independence movement meetings attended by figures including Subhas Chandra Bose and V. K. Krishna Menon. In 1943, together with Ayub Ali Master, he co-founded the Indian Seamen's Welfare League on Christian Street , the first formal welfare organisation for Bengali sailors in Britain. His legacy spans restaurant enterprise, community welfare, and the early political life of the East End Bengali diaspora.
